NEW Interview with Tony Phipps

Q: IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT ANTIQUE OR COLLECTIBLE WOULD YOU BUY RIGHT NOW?

A: I'd have to say early century relics, probably from around the first or second centuries A.D, lifestyle tools or whatever they used for everyday household objects at that time. I've seen a lot of it in museums over in Europe. I can appreciate them. I like those from Egypt, as far as artifacts, and also from Italy, as I'm particularly fond of that part of Europe. When I retire I would like it to be in Sienna, Italy.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST GORGEOUS ANTIQUE YOU EVER SAW, IN A PRIVATE COLLECTION, OR EVEN A MUSEUM?

A: Underneath Vatican City, underneath St. Peter's, they have a mausoleum where many of the popes are buried. I think the handiwork from some of that is probably very, very cool, from what I've seen. Another one would be the Viking's ships; their ships were gorgeous.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING STORY YOU KNOW ABOUT ANY OF THE ANTIQUES YOU HAVE EVER HAD, OR EVEN A COMPELLING STORY YOU KNOW ABOUT AN ANTIQUE YOU DON’T OWN?

A: I have a Russian bayonette from World War I, the Great War, and that is of interest to me because my kids are adopted from Russia.

Q: WHAT ANTIQUE TREND DO YOU LOVE RIGHT NOW?

A: I just like what I see. I'm not much of a trend follower. I like mostly rustic Americana.

Q: WHAT GENRE OF ANTIQUES DO YOU HAVE AS A COLLECTION?

A: Remember the old church buildings that have signs with hymn numbers on them? I started collecting them. I have close to a dozen that date back to late 1700s or early 1800s on up to the early 1900s. They're actually hard to come by. We actually have room in our house to fit them in with some other rustic religion type artifacts.

Q: ARE ANTIQUES A GOOD INVESTMENT? WHY OR WHY NOT?

A: I think they're a great personal investment because if you see something and you like it you ought to buy it. The time to buy it is when you see it, or it might be gone. It's probably like any art work; you don't buy it for the investment, you buy it, number one, because you like it.
