Linda Bowers of A Step In Time Antiques & Decorative Collectibles

Q: IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY, WHAT ANTIQUE OR COLLECTIBLE WOULD YOU BUY IMMEDIATELY?

A: I'd buy first edition books. I love books!

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST GORGEOUS ANTIQUE YOU EVER SAW, IN A PRIVATE COLLECTION, OR EVEN A MUSEUM?

A: Recently I was visiting Bloomington, Indiana and was fortunate to meet a musician who collects and restores antique Edison phonographs, Victrolas and music boxes/cabinets from all over the world. His collection was outstanding. He lived in a large older home with his extensive collection displayed throughout. The pieces were very impressive. I loved seeing the various designs and listening to the early recordings. It was just magical. The horns were various sizes and made of different materials, from precious woods to precious metals. The craftsmanship was extraordinary. His collection even had old advertisements for many of the pieces. It was truly a labor of love for him, and I felt so special that he allowed me to see and experience it.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST INTERESTING STORY YOU KNOW ABOUT ANY OF THE ANTIQUES YOU HAVE EVER HAD, OR EVEN A COMPELLING STORY YOU KNOW ABOUT AN ANTIQUE YOU DON’T OWN?

A: My love of antiques comes from my parents. When I was about 10 years old my family went to live in Waterville, Maine for the summer. It was there that my parents caught “the bug” of antiquing. My siblings hated this new found pastime, but for some reason I absolutely loved it. I went with them every chance I could. One purchase they made was for a large jelly cupboard. While talking with the gentleman who sold them the jelly cupboard they discovered he had just purchased it the week before on a recent buying trip in Lebanon, Tennessee! The jelly cupboard was making a round trip back to Tennessee! My parents still have that beloved jelly cupboard.

Q: WHAT ANTIQUE TREND DO YOU LOVE RIGHT NOW?

A: I just love that young people are appreciating antiques more now, not only in their homes but also in their dress. The creativity that is out there now is truly amazing and inspiring.

Q: WHAT GENRE OF ANTIQUES DO YOU HAVE AS A COLLECTION? IS THERE A GENRE OF ANTIQUES OR COLLECTIBLES YOU WOULD LIKE TO COLLECT IN THE FUTURE?

A: I am a constant collector. I have many collections throughout my home. I love music cabinets, Hummel figurines, Bavarian yellow rose dishes, vintage hats and gloves, quilts, books and dog figurines (particularly those made in Japan with a matte finish), just to name a few.

Q: HAVE YOU EVER RECYCLED OR "UPCYCLED" AN ANTIQUE/VINTAGE ITEM?

A: I have an antique music cabinet that someone had painted a mint green that I use in my “grandparent nursery” to hold baby linens and diapers for my two-year-old twin granddaughters. It is the perfect size and works beautifully in the room.
