Carol Barnes of Chez Elle

Q: IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY, WHAT ANTIQUE OR COLLECTIBLE WOULD YOU BUY IMMEDIATELY?

A: I would buy a historic home that is in need of TLC and work. I would have craftsmen who would restore it to its glory days.

Q: WHAT IS THE MOST GORGEOUS ANTIQUE YOU EVER SAW, IN A PRIVATE COLLECTION, OR EVEN A MUSEUM?

A: It would have to be some of the Impressionist paintings when that exhibit was at the Frist. I am particularly fond of Monet and Degas.

Q: WHAT ANTIQUE TREND DO YOU LOVE RIGHT NOW?

A: I love seeing all the young people who are so appreciative of the '50s and '60s eras that depict my childhood. It brings back warm memories of happy and carefree times.

Q: ARE ANTIQUES A GOOD INVESTMENT? WHY OR WHY NOT?

A: Antique furniture is such a good investment because most of the furniture is real wood, unlike today's pieces; all antiques carry history forward, and that is appealing to most people.

Q: HAVE YOU EVER RECYCLED OR "UPCYCLED" AN ANTIQUE/VINTAGE ITEM? (THIS CAN BE RE-PAINTING, RE-PURPOSING, ETC.)

A: I do this a lot. Just recently I sold a small pine bench which had the hearts on the sides; I used some rosettes and glued them to cover up the hearts, re-painted, and — voila! — a more appealing piece.
