After the Civil War, the dairy industry grew to a degree that milk cans, in aluminum or steel, were used by farmers and dairy employees to transport them for selling milk. They usually contained 5 or 10 gallons of milk. This can is a 10-gallon version and hearkens to days gone by, because in 1938, bulk tanks began to transport milk. It has the letters CMP inside the handle, which were initials of the name of the dairy or milk processing company where it was one used.
